Oklahoma Route 66 Museum

Oklahoma’s official Route 66 Museum is Clinton’s largest attraction and a must see for all visitors! Each year, it draws tens of thousands of visitors to Clinton from all over the world. The museum sends you on a narrated journey through time to experience Route 66 decade by decade. Nostalgic photos, vintage automobiles, and movie clips are just a few of the artifacts to be seen that tell the story of this old road. See the world’s largest curio cabinet which houses many souvenirs that Route 66 travelers have collected since the 1920s. In Clinton, tourists can still "get their kicks on Rt. 66!"

Route 66 Historical Sites

Your Route 66 experience doesn’t stop with a visit to the Route 66 Museum! Travelers can actually drive on the "Mother Road" and see many of the historic sites still in existence. The most famous Route 66 icon still in use is an old roadhouse south of town, formally known as the "Y." In its heyday, the "Y" was a grill serving many Rt. 66 travelers. Clinton’s stone quarried Fire Station and the Rio Siesta motel are also buildings that saw their glory days during the Route 66 era. At our City Hall, tourists can look at a mural of the famous "Oklahoma Land Run" and a statue of the "Pioneer Man."

Mohawk Lodge Indian Store

The Mohawk Lodge Indian Store is located on the east end of Route 66 in Clinton. Established in 1892 by the Dutch Reform Lutheran Church, the purpose was to provide a trading post for Indians to make and sell handmade goods. To date, the Mohawk Lodge Indian Store has been buying, selling and trading authentic Indian artifacts for 108 years...making it Oklahoma’s oldest Indian trading post. When visiting, tourists can spend hours exploring the grounds and the lodge, which is filled with authentic Indian relics, traditional beadwork, hand-woven blankets, tanned hides, and handmade pottery.

Cheyenne Cultural Center

Located just blocks from the Mohawk Lodge, the Cheyenne Cultural Center also celebrates Native American traditions and allows tourists to experience the Cheyenne culture past and present. This one-acre complex is located on the original Red Wheat allotment of the former Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation and consists of a welcome center, pavilion, and an exhibit area. Its landscape is filled with buffalo grass, trees and plants, all pertinent to the Cheyenne culture. Exhibits are scheduled throughout the year and educational tours can be arranged by appointment.

McLain Rogers Park

McLain Rogers Park on 10th Street, is one of the many parks in Clinton and is filled with activities to delight both the young and mature visitors. Activities include swimming, volleyball, picnicking, miniature golf, concerts in the amphitheater, baseball games, or just plain fun on newly purchased playground equipment. This beautifully landscaped park is a must see when you visit Clinton, Oklahoma!

ACME Brick Park

Clinton’s crown jewel and our latest addition, is the new M.T. & Helen Gholston Children’s Playground located at ACME Brick Park. This playground was designed by local children and built by volunteers. It stands as a testament to the volunteer spirit of our citizens. But it is only one attraction at the new 143-acre recreational complex known as ACME Brick Park. Additional components include a 45,000 sq. ft. exhibit hall, a 35,000 sq. ft. indoor activities building with racquet-ball and basketball courts, aerobics area, walking track, and a café. Soccer, baseball, and softball fields, RV parking, and a 1-1/2-mile outdoor hiking trail are slated for Phase Two of the project. Due to be completed in 2002 or 2003, the park will be the new home of the Clinton EXPO, known as western Oklahoma’s largest trade show.

Foss State Park

The Clinton area is also home to many natural outdoor recreation areas. Foss State Park is located in the heart of the Anadarko Basin, which holds the largest supply of natural gas in the world. Only 14 miles west of Clinton, Foss Lake offers six RV campgrounds and over 100 sites with water, electricity, and 10 with sewer. Over 150 picnic tables are scattered throughout the park for visitors’ convenience. Also available is a 17-mile multi-purpose trail for mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking.

A full service marina is located on the lake with boat and stall rentals and a floating restaurant. The lake is well known in Oklahoma for its excellent boating, water skiing, and fishing. A large variety of fish can be found, including sandbass, catfish, sauger, blackbass, and others, which offers fishermen some of the best fishing in Oklahoma!

Washita Wildlife Reserve

The Washita National Wildlife Refuge is an 8,200-acre refuge positioned on the northern portion of Foss Reservoir. The diverse habitats that make up the refuge attract over 250 species of birds and other wildlife native to Oklahoma including coyotes, white-tailed deer, raccoons, beaver, armadillos, and black-tail prairie dogs. Also found on the refuge are three endangered species: the American bald eagle, the whooping crane, and the interior least tern. Each year hunters find their limit in the thousands of acres of bobwhite quail habitat. Other wildlife on the refuge includes mourning dove, wild turkeys, and rabbits. Wintering goose populations usually average over 100,000 during peak months.

Riverside Golf Course

Riverside Golf Course is located east on old Route 66. It is an 18-hole course winding along the banks of the Washita River. Reasonable rates and a well-maintained facility attract players from miles. A pro-shop and lunch counter are available for visitors’ convenience.

Southwest Playhouse

There is always a show "in rehearsal" or "on the boards" at Southwest Playhouse. Five forward-looking, ambitious individuals founded this non-profit group in 1965. Its present home is a building built in 1941 as a stock pavilion and show ring for livestock. Transformed in 1976, the Playhouse holds numerous plays each year in this state-of-the art theatre-in-the-round.
